Build Your Child's Reading Comprehension With These Weekly Vocab Sets

Reader

Vocabulary is a crucial aspect of your child's academic career. The size of a child’s vocabulary in kindergarten predicts their ability to learn to read. The greater a child's vocabulary knowledge, the easier it will be for them to be able to read a text and decode words that they might not know (NPR, 2000). Having a strong vocabulary and robust instruction in this area will help strengthen your child's verbal as well as written communication.

I am excited to be bringing you an email vocab series. In this series I'll be sharing weekly vocabulary words with you and provide you with extension activities to support your child in adding the words to their repertoire.

We're kicking off with three words this week: fragile, brave and several. You can find picture cards and directions on how to explicitely introduce the words to your child here. Extension activities can be found here. Included in the extension activities are read alouds that support the words being taught, writing prompts and other suggested activities. For this week's activities all you will need are the picture cards, sticky notes, paper and pencil ( if you're looking for some journals I have a ton that can be found here that contain picture space as well as the midline paper. ).

Happy Teaching!

Best,

Claire !
